Breeder of Excellence - Barbara Rissler, Price O The Field

This year, the name of one breeder continually came to the forefront of the Committee's discussions. This same person was suggested by several INBA members. Because of this, the 2004 Breeder of Excellence Award Committee proposes as a recipient of this year's award a person who was introduced to goats as an infant, when their milk was all she could digest, who has been breeding dairy goats since 1962, and Nubians exclusively since 1972, a single mom to a large brood of children who has worked tirelessly to promote dairy goats and uncompromisingly breed the best, and who has the numbers to back up her successful program. A member of the American Dairy Goat Association since 1976, her bloodlines have influenced numerous herds across the United States. This herd has produced 48 permanent grand champions, 45 of them homebred, and a National Champion; several Reserve National Champions; and National Junior Champions. She and her family have been named National Premier Breeder four times, and have produced two National Premier Sires (one who won the honor twice). Our committee's submission for INBA's 2004 Breeder of Excellence Award is Barbara Rissler who raises purebred Nubians with her family under the Price O The Field herd name.

As many people's adventures with goats do, Barbara and her family purchased their first goats as a source of milk and meat for their growing family, having no idea that they would someday show several of them to National Show wins. After settling in Missoula, Montana, the family purchased their first registered Nubian does and joined ADGA a couple of years later. The family attended their first show in 1977 and were amazed when they came home with several first place ribbons and a Junior Champion.

Attending their first National Show in 1980 in Springfield, MO, the herd placed high in individual classes and won several group classes. In 1981, at the National Show in Albuquerque, NM, POTF captured the first of four Premier Breeder Awards, and POTF Duncan was named Premier Sire. In 1982, at the National Show in Salem, OR, POTF Mercy was National Champion Nubian and Best Udder and POTF Sun Kist was Reserve National Junior Champion. The herd captured Premier Breeder and Premier Sire awards again, along with the Premier Exhibitor Award. Tragically, in 1982, shortly after returning from the National Show, Ivan Rissler passed away, leaving Barbara to raise their 12 children on her own. With a strong faith in the Lord, Barbara persevered, and the family continued to breed and raise high quality Nubians. In 1984, POTF Princess was Reserve National Champion, and POTF won their third Premier Breeder Award. In 1985, POTF attended the National Show held in Oklahoma City, OK, where their doe POTF Dutchess was named Reserve National Champion. POTF won

Their fourth Premier Breeder award that year, and POTF Dutch Man, a half brother to their original Premier Sire, POTF Duncan, was named Premier Sire.

Even though a decision was made in 1988 to disperse most of the herd, several young does and all the aged does remained, and ten years later POTF was once again at the top. In 1998, at the National Show in St. Paul, MN, POTF Lady Regina was Reserve Grand Champion Nubian with Best Udder. In 1999 at the National Show held in Sacramento, CA, POTF Miss Marlene was first place aged doe and first place udder, and in 2000 at the National Show in Raleigh, NC, POTF Lady Regina was granted first place in her class with first udder and was named Reserve Best Udder. Lady Regina also won Reserve Best Udder at the 2001 National Show. Perhaps one of their most successful does, Lady Regina has won her class at five National Shows. Today, Barbara continues to enjoy a much smaller herd of high quality Nubians and tries to make several shows each year. Although she talks of retiring now that all her children are grown and married, we know that the bloodlines she has worked so hard to maintain will continue to influence Nubian herds across the United States for years to come.

Through the years, many Nubian herds have used Price O The Field bloodlines to improve their own animals. These include Regher's, Wingwood Farm, Wooden Bridge, Royal Cedars, Cedarsage, Easy Stream, Hidden Meadows, H. Homestead, Oakledge and Pruittville.

Two National Champions, Wooden Bridge Poppycake Banner and Royal Cedars SB Sugar Candy, and a Reserve National Champion, Wingwood Farm Luke Tamaulipas all descend from Price O The Field animals.
